With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to take a look at classic candies from decades past. These are sure to make the senior citizens in your life smile, and perhaps bring back some fond memories! You might be surprised at how long some of these candies have been in production – almost eighty years in some cases! Let’s take a walk down Memory Lane of Halloween’s past…
(All of the candies featured here can be found at www.CandyCrate.com or www.OldTimeCandy.com)
Late 1800s!
Did you know that Goetze’s Caramel Creams have been around since the 19th century? According to Candy Crate, “this is the original classic Caramel Cream with the tasty fondant cream candy center. Also referred to as Bulls-Eyes, these candies have been a favorite since the late 1800s.” You can still find this treat in specialty stores, or at the links we posted above! In fact, why not pick up a bag for those you love who are in senior care? They might appreciate a candy older than they are! 😉
1940s
Bazooka Gum, Bit-O-Honey, and Black Taffy were all popular candies in the 1940s. Did you know that the last one used to be called “Black Jack Taffy?” Dots – the popular treat now associated with movies and popcorns – were also created in 1940, and have stood the test of time!
1950s
Hot Tamales – those spicy, cinnamon-flavored chewy candies – first came out this decade! And here’s something you probably didn’t know: M&Ms were created in the 40s, but didn’t get the “M” stamp on the back until 1950. Candy Crate also tells us that “1954 was a big year for the M&M Brand, Peanut M&M’s were introduced, the slogan ‘melts in your mouth, not in your hands’ was started, and the world famous M&M characters made their debut on TV!” Also of interest – PEZ candy was invented in 1927, but didn’t come to the United States until 1952.
1960s
The 100 Grand Candy Bar was introduced in 1966, but its name was later changed to “100 Grand” in the 1980s. Thankfully, you can still get this Nestlé gem from most retailers, filled with chocolate, crisped rice, and caramel. Candy Crate also has this rare candy: “Have you been looking for Delfa Rolls? Or maybe you remember them as Danish Ribbons? A favorite licorice item from the sixties, the original brand of strawberry licorice rolls was named Broadway Rolls. Now, that great tradition is being kept alive with new and improved Broadway Rolls, available in Strawberry and Licorice flavors.”
We hope you – and the seniors in your life – enjoy this sweet walk down Memory Lane. Perhaps you’ll be able to pick up some candy classics in time for Halloween, and introduce younger generations to time-honored candy traditions! In any case, you can be sure that Pennsylvania Agency of Nurses will be celebrating in style come Halloween!
