glaucoma awareness monthDid you know that January is Glaucoma Awareness Month? It’s estimated that approximately 3 million people in the United States suffer from this condition. While it may sound like it only affects a small portion of the population, glaucoma can have a serious impact on those it impacts personally, as well as their families. #1: Who Is Affected By Glaucoma?

Anyone can develop glaucoma but elderly people are at much greater risk than younger adults and children. The department of health identifies the following traits as a higher risk than the general population:

  • Mexican Americans over the age of 60.
  • Anybody with a family history of the disease.

As we age, our nutritional and caloric needs change, but it can be difficult to change well-established eating habits. For instance, that pizza in college where you could eat six slices with no problem might cause you some issues ten, twenty, or even forty years later! It’s also a general trend that adults become less physically active as they get older, and our diets should reflect this reality if it applies. With that in mind, let’s take a look at a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and find out what’s good for seniors!
