December is a wonderful month full of cheer, holidays, and celebrations!* We at Pennsylvania Agency of Nurses wanted to share some of the festivities going on that might be enjoyable for seniors, families, and friends alike! Even if a loved one is in senior care, see which of these activities they might be able to enjoy. Let’s take a waltz down Holiday Lane, and see what’s happening this month in Delaware, Montgomery, and Chester Counties!
Macy’s Christmas Light Show:
This holiday tradition stretches back more than 50 years! Held at Macy’s Center City in Philadelphia, the light show runs every day (starting around Thanksgiving) through the end of the year, and the noontime show features the Wanamaker Organ.
Christmas Village in Philadelphia:
Held in the LOVE Park (Center City), Christmas Village is an annual European-style holiday celebration. Some of the biggest attractions are the variety of German foods available (think bratwurst, waffles, mulled wine, and more), the dozens of vendors selling crafts, treats, and knickknacks, and the Christkind. Even better: admission is free!
Pennsylvania Ballet presents George Balenchine’s The Nutcracker:
The classic holiday play is featured in December celebrations the world over. The ballet runs December 11th through December 31st…get your tickets here!
“A Christmas Story, The Musical”
Do you remember this iconic film? If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll probably enjoy the Walnut Street Theater’s musical take on this classic, which runs through January 10, 2016. Tickets are available here.
Kwanzaa Celebrations:
There are multiple events happening in the Philadelphia area to celebrate Kwanzaa. December 26 and 27th will see celebrations happening at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, and the Please Touch Museum (both days).
This is by no means a full listing of all the events happening in the city and surrounding areas, but we’re sure that there is something for everyone to enjoy this December. Best of all, these events can be great fun for seniors, singles, and families alike! *Hopefully, December is a cheery month for you and your family! Unfortunately, December is also prime time for people to develop seasonal affective disorder. If you or someone you know is suffering from this type of depression, please call a doctor to schedule a checkup.
